The Arts Society Kennet & Swindon `TASKS’ – February 2023 Meeting – The Lecture: ‘The Low Countries and the start of Landscape Painting’
20 February 2023 @ 11:00 am
Firmly rooted in the 16th century Flemish tradition, the Dutch created a new genre of ‘Landscape Painting’.A unique relationship with the land, one that differs from that in other European countries, is the source of this genre’s identity. Huge contemporary engineering projects; the creation of dykes, drainage ditches and extensive land reclamation made one proud Dutchman to proclaim ‘God created the world, but the Dutch created Holland’. Panoramic views of woods and seascapes, dunes, country roads, rivers and canals, all themes for a new generation of artists, became very popular and the works created have become known as the Dutch Golden Age.
THE LECTURER IS MARISKA BEEKENKAMP-WLADIMIROFF. Mariska is a social psychologist by training, until the birth of her children led to a change in direction. She completed an MA in Dutch Baroque Art at the Courtauld Institute, since when she has lectured on art history, focussing especially on the Dutch Golden Age,
