Spring Study Series at The Merchant’s House – ‘English Art in the Age of Louis XIV’ by David Evans
28 April 2023 @ 10:30 am – 12:30 pm
The painting and sculpture of the later Stuart period was strongly influenced by the arts which flourished at the court of Louis XIV and also by the art of Holland, chief of the United Provinces.
This was the age of Peter Lely, Grinling Gibbons and Godfrey Kneller, all of them born and trained abroad.
Only in the reign of Anne did some of the most important commissions go to an Englishman, James Thornhill, whose example helped to inspire his son-in-law, that proudly English artist, William Hogarth.
