OBJECTS OF DESIRE – Cabinets & Ornamental Boxes for the Collector
a lecture by ANNE HAWORTH

Anne Haworth is a lecturer at the V and A and a tour guide at Buckingham Palace. She is a well-established authority on both European and Oriental porcelain and is a senior ceramics specialist at both Bonhams and Christies.
Monday, 19 June 2017 at the Elledune Centre, Wroughton : coffee served from 10.00 – lecture starts at 10.55
This lecture focuses on fine and rare caskets and cabinets made during the seventeenth century to contain precious objects such as jewellery, cameos, miniatures and all manner of objets de vertu. Each cabinet was unique, made by skilled craftsmen using a variety of techniques and veneers in costly materials including ebony, tortoiseshell, amber and lapis lazuli. Such cabinets were made in European cities such as Augsburg, Antwerp and Rome, while others were imported  from Japan, China and India – often finished with precious lacqerwork. The interiors can be equally spectacular – using a variety of wood veneers, mirror glass and many contain secret compartments for storing the most intimate of objects. We shall be looking at the product of conspicuous consumption and some of the finest workmanship the Renaissance and Baroque could offer.
