North Wessex Downs Walking Festival – Ridgeway ramblings

We start our walk along the Ridgeway (Britain’s oldest road), passing the Lord Wantage Monument and soaking up the views. Our ramblings then take us off through the downs along Old Street to reach the sleepy village of Farnborough, the highest village in Berkshire! Here we take time to explore All Saints Church and marvel at the beautiful stained-glass window, designed by John Piper in memory of the Poet Laureate, John Betjeman (past resident and church warden). This is a good spot for our picnic break; after which, an ancient green lane leads us back up to Lattin Down and the Ridgeway.

Along our way we can expect stunning panoramic views, wildflowers, and butterflies. We will also discover how this ancient downland landscape has captured the imagination of many writers and poets, including Hardy and Betjeman.

We follow well-defined paths and tracks, which may be uneven, rough or muddy in part. The route is undulating with three gentle climbs and a total ascent/descent of approx. 550ft. No stiles.

Please dress appropriately for a walk in the countryside and having regard to the British weather – be aware that much of the route is exposed! A small rucksack is useful for personal items such as water, picnic, spare clothing, suncream, etc. We advise walkers to carry personal first aid. Dogs on leads are welcome (livestock may be present).
