Model engineering exhibition at Crofton Beam Engines – and Engines in Steam
26 May 2024 @ 10:30 am – 4:30 pm
The late May Bank holiday Sunday and Monday steaming days include, for the first time, an exhibition of models and craftwork by Crofton volunteers.
As well as helping to support and maintain Crofton’s historic engines many of our volunteers have home workshops producing beautifully made models in metal and wood of static engines and railway locomotives, trucks and even a barrel organ. Not limited to steam power, these engines represent thousands of hours of careful research and construction featuring implementations of Stirling cycle heat engines as well as petrol power, wind and steam. The exhibition will held in the Side Boiler House and the makers will be there to talk to about the models and their workshops.
Late May Bank Holiday Steaming
Crofton Beam Engines will be open and steaming for the late May Bank Holiday on the 26th and 27th of May. Open from 10:30 to 16:30 on both days.
Come and see our magnificent beam engines at work pumping water from Wilton Water into the Kennet and Avon Canal, just as they have done for over 200 years. Watch these surprisingly quiet marvels of British engineering and remember that our Number One Engine was installed in 1812, that’s 7 years after the Battle of Trafalgar and 3 years before the Battle of Waterloo!
You can visit Crofton by road or via the canal. We have a pay car park or walk or cycle along the canal towpath and join us via the canal tunnel.
