Graphite & Stitch – an exhibition by Sarah Cross at The White Horse Bookshop Gallery
24 October 2022 @ 9:30 am – 5:30 pm
Following her degree in Fashion and Textiles, Sarah has been teaching Fine Art and Textiles since 1994. Alongside teaching, she has worked in television, presenting children’s Art shows for Carlton TV and leading a team for Pearson Exam Board, moderating GCSE Art and Design portfolios. Sarah has been making and selling Art worldwide for the past thirty years, collaborating with a diverse range of companies and designers to create work for the London Fashion Week catwalk, The Royal Henley Regatta and prestigious brand Fox Brothers & Co Ltd to name but a few. In 2019, Sarah also won the BBC show Home is where the Art is, a programme that ‘challenges artists to create artworks for people they’ve never met.’
Graphite & Stitch follows in the footsteps of a collection of work Sarah created in November 2021 titled, Face Off. Having thoroughly enjoyed studying the dynamic between different species and their fight for survival, in this exhibition, Sarah explores British wildlife in greater depth. In doing so, she is returning, in part, to her roots in Textile Art, whilst also continuing to develop graphite studies of the wild animals native to our country.
The drawings feature flashes of colour to highlight the stunning hues within the eyes, fur, or feathers. Referring to them as ‘colourpoint’ images, they intimate the reality of the animal depicted. The textile pieces use a combination of traditional paintbrush work, inks and a sewing machine, employing free machine embroidery techniques to represent the subject. These depict the full glory of colour offered up by these wonderful creatures – the use of stitch representing rough textures or soft feathered wings.
The exhibition runs between Friday 7 and Sunday 30 October, opening times are 09:00 – 17:30 Monday – Saturday, and 11:00 – 16:00 Sundays
