FROM CASTLE TO MANSION: The development of the country house in Medieval England – A Marlborough History Society talk by Christopher Rogers
18 March 2021 @ 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm
The Marlborough History Society has taken to Zoom, as have so many other organisations, and we’re happy to welcome the well known local lecturer Christopher Rogers to our next meeting on March 18 at 7:30 pm.
Christopher will be talking about the development of the country house and he gives this taster for our information:
FROM CASTLE TO MANSION : The development of the country house in Medieval England. Living was not about castles and crenellations, fighting and feasting! As England became a safer place in which to live, the castle gave way to a more gracious style of living. Defensive walls may have remained, sometimes rather notional and making ‘a statement’ rather than keeping out the neighbours. Within those walls castles became more civilised and new manor houses, some of palatial quality were built. This lecture looks at this transition by looking at a range of these houses great and small, and traces the development of the latest ‘must have’ features such as a great hall and a solar and even a garderobe.
