Crofton ‘in Steam’ over Easter
31 March 2024 @ 10:30 am – 4:30 pm

Come and see the magnificent beam engines at work pumping water from Wilton Water into the Kennet and Avon Canal, just as they have done for over 200 years. Watch these surprisingly quiet marvels of engineering and remember that the Number One Engine was installed in 1812, the same year Napoleon retreated from Moscow!
For Easter there will also be ‘Duck Races’. Watch your ducks pop out of the pump and race away towards the canal. There will be prizes for both first and last duck to pass under our bridge. Also an Easter Egg trail in the Crofton grounds, search high and low for an egg.
The team who makes this happen will be on hand Watch them bring theengines to life, watch the boiler stokers feed the boiler, raising steam so our engine drivers can start the massive pumps to raise water from Wilton Water some 40 feet, feeding the leat that takes the water to the highest point of the Kennet and Avon canal.
