Our 2025 Christmas concerts are based around the atmospheric “Fantasia on Christmas Carols” by Ralph Vaughan-Williams. This well-loved work is based on traditional carols from Herefordshire, Somerset and Sussex amongst others and is dedicated to that great collector of rural folk-songs, Cecil Sharp.

Our programme explores some of the treasures of the Christmas Motet repertoire, featuring works by Jacob Handl (C16th), William Byrd and Peter Philips (C17th) and Anton Bruckner (C19th). In a first for AVE, we offer a setting of “Away in a manger” by Stroud-based composer Jonathan Trim.

In a departure from our normal format we are featuring a guest appearance by local singing group “Ten in a Bar” led by Jill Hodge. They will add their own special mix of Christmas music to the proceedings.

There will be readings and organ solos and opportunities for you all to join in with some traditional carols. We look forward to you joining us.
