The popular Marr Green Farm Shop at Burbage is to be sold, as the family who run the business look to start a new life as beef cattle farmers in Devon.
The farmhouse and land – which includes the farm shop – is on the market with estate agents Woolley and Wallis for £700,000.
Shane and Samantha Mitchener bought the grade II listed farm house at public auction six years ago, and opened the farm shop in an adjacent outbuilding in 2007.
The shop, which sells local meat, fruit, vegetables, dairy products and beers, wines and spirits, as well as animal feeds, is popular with people living in the villages around Burbage, and also benefits from passing trade from people using the busy A346 between Marlborough and Salisbury.
Behind the farm shop is a butchery where Shane prepares cuts of meat – which has proved highly popular with patrons.
This week, Sam said she hoped the new owners would want to keep the farm shop open.
“It’s a great business and a lot of fun to run,” she said. “The shop has an alcohol licence, and there’s plenty of space to expand the shop into the outbuildings behind.”
Sam admitted the move had come as a surprise to her many loyal customers, but said the time was right for her family to move.
“We’ll be sad to leave Burbage, but the size of farm we want just isn’t available in Wiltshire,” she said. “It’s a lot easier to find the land in Devon.
“Our eldest son, Jack, starts school next year, and this just feels the right time to move,” she said.
The three-bedroom Victorian thatched farmhouse sits in a little over five acres of farmland. The farm buildings extend to a total of 5,026 square feet.
The farm shop business is being sold as part of the property, and the existing stock can be bought by the new owners by separate negotiation.
