Marlborough Golf Club: new captains drive in & sponsorship extended

L to r: Alex Jewel, Mike Paines, Patrick Shaw & Sue LyonsL to r: Alex Jewel, Mike Paines, Patrick Shaw & Sue LyonsTrish King, the first woman to captain Marlborough Golf Club since it was founded in 1888, has handed over the captaincy to Patrick Shaw.

At Ms King's last supper as captain, Patrick Shaw paid tribute to her hard work during her year and recalled playing-days in the 1980’s when he regularly partnered Charles Whatley, 'a leading light at the club, former captain and all-round perfect gentleman': “He would have been amazed, but immensely proud to know that his daughter would one day be our first female club captain."

Trish King told members how grateful she was and how amazing everyone had been: "It was a daunting task, but your support and encouragement throughout the year has been a huge factor in me being able to enjoy it so much."

Patrick Shaw is joined on the year's 'team of captains' by Sue Lyons (Ladies captain), Alex Jewell (Juniors captain) and Mike Paines (Seniors captain.)  The supper raised £1,226 for local charities.

David Ferris (L) with Julian Wraight of Dick Lovett BMW SwindonDavid Ferris (L) with Julian Wraight of Dick Lovett BMW SwindonThe Club has also announced that Dick Lovett BMW Swindon has agreed to a further three years sponsorship for the Marlborough Golf Club Seniors Open.

Julian Wraight, the new principal dealer at Dick Lovett BMW Swindon and their general manager, Derek Owen, met recently with members of the Club's seniors committee.

Mr Wraight confirmed the sponsorship for the Seniors Open would continue to 2019. He also confirmed the trophy for the best score by a local Club player on the day would now be known as the Dick Lovett Swindon BMW trophy.

David Ferris, chairman of the Club Seniors is delighted with this continuing support from Dick Lovett BMW: "Their sponsorship has been a real boost to our Seniors Open competition. The 90 places for away players were taken before the end of February. The 40 places for the home players were booked within 48 hours. This clearly demonstrates the popularity of the event."

The Marlborough Golf Club Seniors Open takes place on Tuesday, July 11. The first prize is £100.
