Yet another cup triumph for MYFC. This time it was the U9s who lifted the North Wilts Youth Football League Cup Final trophy, played at Wootton Bassett on Sunday 29 April.
In the final they met Stratton Junior Bears in a very tense match, with both teams proving to be strong in their league this season, and MYFC found it a challenge to overcome some excellent play by the opponents.
However, one of the biggest strengths of the U9 team is their organized play and work rate, pressuring their opponents high up the pitch, and MYFC took the lead in the first quarter with a goal from a corner. Stratton answered by scoring a few minutes later! 1-1. The second and third quarter was hard fought, and the MYFC goalkeeper delivered some fantastic saves at crucial points of the game and going into the last quarter the it was very close and difficult to call who would take home the cup!
Stratton took the lead through an amazing long kick upwind, totally unexpected, but a really nice skill shown by the young Stratton player. 2-1.
However, this seemed to shake up MYFC and it gave them renewed energy, moving the play further into the Stratton half, and by pushing one of the defenders into midfield, this creating more pressure. Stratton defended very bravely but could not stand against the positive effect and the ball found its way into the net behind the Stratton goalie. 2-2!
With two minutes left on the clock, MYFC combined brilliantly through the length of the pitch. The ball ended up at the corner of the box and from there, MYFC found the net to secure a victory. 3-2 winners!
Team Manager Ben Danielsen said: “Throughout the match the spectators watched a MYFC side that played very fairly and passed the ball well, enhanced by some fantastic individual performances where our players showed off their skills with some great dribbling. Very proud – well done lads!”
MYFC lifted the trophy and signed off the U9 2017/18 season as NWYFL League Cup Winners!
