St John’s Year 11 Prom - students celebrate in style

Arriving in style for St John's Year 11 PromArriving in style for St John's Year 11 PromOver two hundred Year 11 students from St John’s Marlborough celebrated finishing their GCSE exams last Friday July 13.

As the only rain seen in Marlborough for weeks lashed down, the students arrived at the school in an amazing assortment of vehicles.  These ranged from an ambulance to vintage camper vans, from horse drawn carriages to Harley Davidsons.

Martin Cook, Director of Logistics for St John’s, who masterminded the arrival schedule with help from sixth formers said, ‘A dramatic entrance to the Prom is a big part of the event, I never cease to be amazed by the resourcefulness of our students in securing such varied modes of transport.  This year we were slightly challenged by the arrival of an articulated lorry and, of course, we had the usual vintage car breakdowns but everyone got there on time.”

A large crowd of proud parents and onlookers gathered at the top of the drive to admire the elegant dresses and smart suits.  Long dresses in a myriad of colours seemed to be the favoured option this year for the girls and the boys were almost unrecognisably smart in their suits.

“It is,” remarked one parent, “hard to believe that these are the same children who were still in school uniform only a few weeks ago.  They all look so sophisticated and grown up.”

Students processed up the red carpet into school where the atrium and theatre had been transformed for the evening.  Then the fun really began.

There was a magic selfie mirror, chocolate fountain, popcorn machine, party food, unlimited pick’n’mix and dancing, lots of dancing.

Awards were given for the Best Couple, Best Bromance and Biggest Drama Queen.  Josie Beer was voted Prom Queen and Blake Kent Prom King.

The evening culminated in a magnificent firework display which lit up the night sky and was enjoyed by many Marlborough residents. One student commented, “It was a great evening, all the teachers dressed up, they looked amazing.  Half way through the evening they came round giving out survivors goodie bags which was really lovely.”
