Residents pack Council Chamber to present petition to Town Councillors

At last night's (Monday 20 January) meeting of the Town Council residents of Stonebridge Close presented a petition objecting to a proposal from the Town Council and ARK (Action for the River Kennet) to create an access into Stonebridge Meadow from Stonebridge Close.

Announced by ARK as a 're-opening' of the access point, residents dispute whether there was ever an access point there previously, pointing out that it was originally created as a vehicle turning point by the developers of Stonebridge Close.

Their concern was that installation of a new gateway would create parking problems and obstruction to residents, as visitors to Stonebridge meadow such as dog walkers and allotment holders would park their vehicles in the confimed area of Stpnebridge Close and use the gateway to access the meadow area.

They raise the further question that the owner of Stonebridge Meadow "already has a lawful agricultural right of way through Marlborough Town Football Club land, so why is a second access necessary?"

Residents concerns are shared by almost all living in the Close.  Of the thirty three properties in Stonebridge Close, twenty nine signed with only one actually refusing, and many of those who signed were present in the crowded Council Chamber.

Mayor Mervyn Hall, chairing the meeting of the Town Council confirmed that this issue would be discussed at the Amenities & Open Spaces Committee meeting of the Town Council on Monday 3 February, starting at 7pm in the Town Hall.  There is also the Annual Review of the Stonebridge Management Plan being held at the Town Hall tomorrow evening (Wednesday 22 January) at 7pm where representatives from ARK and the Town Council will be present.
