Waitrose Marlborough is supporting the Marlborough Choral Society’s Christmas concert at St Mary’s Church on Saturday December 8 at 7.30pm.
Their support is very apt because one of the concert’s Christmas pieces, Bob Chilcott’s Wenceslas was originally commissioned by the John Lewis Partnership for their one hundred and fiftieth anniversary in 2014.
The story of King Wenceslas who, with his somewhat reluctant page, braved the cruel winter’s night to go to the aid of a poor and hungry man, will form the centrepiece of the concert.
The traditional words by JM Neale are interwoven with additional text by Bob Chilcott’s friend, the poet Charles Bennett.
The concert will be conducted by David Ripley and the programme will also include a Magnificat by Vivaldi, Britten’s Ceremony of Carols – and traditional carols for audience participation. Instrumental support will be provided by an eight-piece ensemble.
Reflecting the King Wenceslas theme of bringing food to those in need, the retiring collection will be in aid of our local food bank which is affiliated to the Trussell Trust.
Tickets are £10 and are available from Sound Knowledge, choir members or on the door.
