Work on updating gas pipes in Calne has involved a one-way traffic system and a multi-way set of lights on The Strand – which is part of the A4. It will last until September 24.
Some people have taken an hour to get through the town. Even late on a weekday evening it can take 10-15 minutes to get through.
The alternative from Marlborough is to go via Devizes and Rowde. But when you reach Beckhampton roundabout signs warn you of long delays in Devizes and urge you to find another route.
This is due to a Wiltshire Council scheme to install lights at the London Road/Windsor Drive roundabout. Three-way temporary traffic lights are causing huge holdups. This work was supposed to have been finished before the schools went back.
This week, on a lunchtime journey from Chippenham to Marlborough – avoiding Calne – it took 15-plus minutes to get out of Devizes. And incoming traffic was stationary back to the first roundabout on London Road as you come toward the town.
