WJ’s – the latest dining experience in Marlborough

Mark Waring-Jones outside WJs in Hughenden YardMark Waring-Jones outside WJs in Hughenden YardMark Waring-Jones opened WJs in Hughenden Yard just last week.  Aimed at the younger generation the restaurant offers sizzling burgers, chicken, vegetarian and vegan options and light-bites.

Mark told marlborough.news:  “ We are trying to do something a bit different.  Marlborough has enough places to get a coffee and cake.  We’re offering a place for the 16-25 age group to go to as well as families.  We want to provide a place for families to have a midweek tea that’s going to be affordable.”

WJs offers a children’s menu for £6.95, including a main course, dessert and drink.  The restaurant caters well for vegetarians and vegans.

“Our Moving Mountains meat-free burger which includes beetroot, mushrooms, coconut oil herbs and spices, is going down an absolute storm as well as the accompanying pink pickled onions.  We’ve had lots of people asking about the pink pickles.  It’s called a bread and butter pickle recipe, not sure why but it’s a great addition to the fillings!”

All the meat comes from Sumblers Butchers and all the desserts are homemade.  Sticky toffee pudding was the homemade dessert of the day when marlborough.news visited.

Mark and his family are no strangers to Marlborough, in fact wife Emma runs the sweet shop also in Hughenden Yard.  From 2004 to 2014 Mark owned Applebys which was famous for its homemade bread and soup lunches.

Since 2014 Mark has been working in accountancy but he is pleased to be back in charge of a restaurant.  “I am massively excited to get back into the trade and to feel the buzz again.  Having a full restaurant and everyone happy is rewarding and challenging.”

It’s been a busy few months for Mark as, for the second year running, he participated in the charity Ride 100 on August 3.  He managed to beat his last year’s record on the Olympic road race circuit by twenty-one minutes.

Mark has raised over two thousand pounds for charity from sponsorship of his participation in Ride 100.  Marlborough.news reported on this last year.

Now the ride is over Mark can concentrate on WJs.  He is hoping to run special evenings – a steak night, veggie night and ribs and fries with a pint of beer or glass of wine are just some of the specials that will be on offer.

WJs is open Tuesday to Saturday 12 to 9pm and on a Sunday 12 to 4pm. It is closed on a Monday. For more information go to https://www.wjsmarlborough.co.uk/menu  or to Facebook and Instagram.
