Marlborough will be featured in the ‘Britain in Bloom’ series on BBC2 this coming Saturday (13 April) at 5pm.
“Chris Bavin meets the Marlborough Bloomers from Wiltshire, who are determined to show off the prized green areas away from their famous high street.” states the BBC website.
Marlborough is one of fifteen towns being covered in this year’s series which follows the overall Britain in Bloom competition. Run by the Royal Horticultural Society, it’s a competition in which Marlborough has become increasingly successful in recent years culminating in last year’s ‘Double Gold’ achievement, winning the Trophy for highest marks in category from South West Travel Association and the Sponsors’ Cup for the most meritorious entry.
Saturday’s screening will “showcase what Marlborough does so well – its community rallying to meet the challenge of being one of the best entrants in South West in Bloom” said Town Clerk, Shelley Parker.
She added: ”Hopefully, this BBC In Bloom episode will also focus on the hard work put in by local businesses and the town’s It’s Your Neighbourhood groups – an important part of the overall package. It’s all bound to set the scene for another successful 2019 entry. The town is recognised nationally as one of the best places to shop and this confirms that the Marlborough in Bloom team is making it an even better place for both residents and visitors.”
As well as the main awards Marlborough did extremely well last year in the ‘In Your Neighbourhood’ section. Alma Place, The Merchant’s House, the Old Victorian Cemetery, Waterfront Garden, the Community Orchard, Stonebridge Wild River Reserve, Coopers Meadow and Marlborough College were all designated outstanding while Preshute School’s rain garden and St Peter’s Churchyard were designated thriving and Plume of Feathers and The Mead as improving.
Action for the River Kennet also won the Sutton Seeds Cup for an Outstanding Area of Nature Conservation at Stonebridge Wild River Reserve.
“I’m thrilled that Britain in Bloom will be showcasing Marlborough for half an hour on BBC 2 and we can share with the world what a beautiful, friendly and busy market town this is – both in which to live……. or to visit”. said Val Compton, of the very successful team behind the Waterfront Garden entry in the ‘In Your Neighbourhood’ section.
Marlborough in Bloom are always looking for volunteers, people to help make Marlborough look its best all through the summer as well as for the judging period. If you would like to become involved please e-mail Ann Lovett, Acting Chair of Marlborough in Bloom at k.lovett344@btinternet.com.
Don’t forget, Saturday 13 April, 5pm, BBC2…….
