At Monday’s meeting of the full Town Council councillor Mark Cooper was voted unanimously to be Deputy Mayor for the coming year, commencing in May.
“I am extremely honoured and humbled” he told marlborough.news, adding “I am not assuming anything until the confirmation vote takes place at the Mayor Making ceremony this coming May, but this is a great honour and I will do everything I can to respect the position and represent the Town”.
Coming from a long standing Marlborough line Mark won’t be the first from his family to represent the Town as Mayor. His father, Maurice was Mayor twice – in 1989/90 and again 2000/01. His uncle, Stewart Dobson also twice Mayor, firstly between 1986/87 and then again over the millennium 1999/20000, and is still the Wiltshire Councillor for Marlborough East, so he will be upholding what is becoming a family tradition. Mark’s great uncle, Henry (Cooper) was also Town Mayor twice, Mark believes in 1933 and again at the end of the Second World War in 1945. ”Marlborough is in my blood, my DNA” he added, “It’s the town I adore”.
Whilst Mark will be new to the role, last year’s Mayor and current Deputy Mayor, Cllr Mervyn Hall was elected to be Mayor again for the coming year. This year’s Mayor Making ceremony will take place at the May Annual Town Council meeting on Monday 13 May.
