Threat of unaffordable parking charges hangs over Marlborough resident

Val Compton at Kennet Place - on a summer's dayVal Compton at Kennet Place - on a summer's dayVal Compton, who has lived in Marlborough for 22 years, has written to Wiltshire Council to explain the plight of those who will soon be asked to pay £720 a year for a parking season ticket - with no guarantee of finding a space.  She says she may have to leave her Marlborough home.
Mrs Compton needs a car to visit her two disabled adult children.  She has bought a season ticket at the present annual rate - £394 - which will last her till next May.  But, she emphasises, with no certainty of finding a parking space - nearby or further away.

She tells marlborough.news: "Next May I will be unable to pay the new charge.  Unless there is a new residents' parking scheme or the Town Council get the land in Kelham Gardens for a residents' car park, I will seriously have to think about whether I can really stay in Marlborough.  And that will be heart breaking."

Mrs Compton has been campaigning for years to get a residents' parking scheme for the town.  Her letter to Wiltshire Council contains very sound ideas how a workable scheme might be introduced.  You can read it here - please do so as it has practical answers to one of the town's major parking problems.

The introduction by Wiltshire Council of parking charges on Sundays and Bank Holidays and the new season ticket costs, are currently out to consultation.  This ends on Monday - May 21.

It is not a normal consultation - you have to write a letter or fill in a form:

"You can respond in writing to: Traffic Order Team, Highways and Transport, Wiltshire Council, County Hall, Trowbridge BA14 8JN; by email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or use the online form, quoting WILTS/TRO/Parking."

A brief statement of the Council's reasons for the changes and increases is here.
