"Madame, can I check your identity before you recycle that corn flake packet?"

A recent example of typical fly tipping in a rural locationA recent example of typical fly tipping in a rural location

You have nine days to work out who you are - or who you think 'they' would like you to be.  And you will need a bit of paper or plastic to prove who you think you are.

Now this is not a Brexit debate issue...   not a pre-Brexit issue...   not even a post-Brexit issue.

It's a recycling issue.

From April 9 you will need to be able to prove your identity - and address - when you visit a Wiltshire Council household recycling centre.  This is to prove that you live in the county and are not crossing borders with your old fridge-freezer.

There has been some opposition to this move - especially from farmers who foresee it will cause an immediate increase in fly-tipping on their fields and in their hedgerows.

Never fear.  In a last minute change to the Wiltshire Council budget that starts this week, Council Leader Baroness Scott created a new £670,000 budget line to combat litter and fly-tipping.  Ironically, she took most of the money - £655,000 - from the Council's Rural Fund for improving the environment in rural parts of Wiltshire.

Still, at least this year the towns will be free of litter and fly-tipping.

This is NOT an April Fool story...what has been going on in the county and country recently seems to be beyond parody.

FOOTNOTE: For avoidance of doubt "Acceptable forms of ID include: Your driving licence, Council Tax bill, Utlity bill."

Do not take your passport as it does not - yet - include your address.
