Where does Claire Perry stand on the steep rise in parking permit charges? She replies to John Ford's request

Last week marlborough.news published a report on the letter that High Street resident John Ford had sent to Claire Perry MP - asking her to spell out her position on Wiltshire Council's proposed £326 increase in the cost of annual parking permits.  They are set to rise in August from £394 a year to £720 a year.  Here is Mrs Perry's response:

Dear Mr Ford

Thank you very much for your email regarding proposed increases in car park season ticket charges in Marlborough.  I do appreciate that these proposed increases are a concern for residents who do not have access to private parking, and also for businesses and their staff who work in the town.

If I may say though, I believe the comparative prices you have documented are for residents' permits (rather than season tickets) - for example a car park season ticket in Southampton is £1200, or £750 for residents' off street parking.

I understand that whilst there is not a residents' parking scheme in Marlborough, these are available in other towns in Wiltshire including Salisbury, Bradford on Avon and Devizes and it is proposed that residents' parking scheme charges will range from £50 - £100 in these locations.

Whilst car parking and other transport matters are the responsibility of Wiltshire Council, as your Member of Parliament I have been closely following the progress of the Marlborough Area Neighbourhood Plan (MANP) including the recently completed Parking Survey.

It seems to me that there is an opportunity for the MANP together with Marlborough Town Council to consider the introduction of a residents' parking scheme, along with other schemes to provide more parking facilities for businesses and visitors going forward, and I have therefore copied this letter to Cllr Mervyn Hall, Mayor of Marlborough and to Wiltshire Councillors, Cllr Nick Fogg and Cllr Stewart Dobson and Cllr Bridget Wayman, Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Waste.

Thank you, once again, for taking the time to get in touch with me.  Please do not hesitate to contact me again if there is anything else with which I can assist you.  You may be interested to know that I email a weekly roundup to Constituents outlining what I have been doing locally and in Westminster.  If you do not already receive this and would like to be added to the list of recipients, pleased visit www.claireperry.org.uk where you can sign up for regular updates.

Yours sincerely...
