a lecture by
Julia Musgrave
Monday, 20 January 2020 – at the Ellendune Centre, Wroughton.
Coffee served from 10 00a.m. – the meeting begins promptly at 11 00a.m.
Michelangelo Meresi di Caravaggio was at one and the same time a most influential and controversial artist.
His unique portrayal of ordinary people and his ability to capture light and shade inspired
many contemporary artists, including Peter Paul Rubens, Rembrandt & many others.
Yet for many he is as much famed for his violent lifestyle & criminal record as for his art.
Was it the violence of the times or the turbulence of his own wayward spirit
which inspired the dramatic lighting & intense naturalism of his work?
This lecture follows the many incidents in the artist’s life
and explores the reasons why his influence spread so far.
The lecturer: Julia Musgrave gained her first degree in chemical engineering & embarked
on a career as a chartered information systems engineer and IT project manager.
In 2008 she decided to change career & became an art historian.
She gained a graduate diploma in the history of art from the Courtauld Institute
and an MLitt from the University of Glasgow.
She is currently working towards her PhD at the University of York.
